I met luthier Frank Krocker in the late 1980s while touring in Germany. Besides making very fine classical guitars, Frank was interested in creating the “Frame Guitar”, an electric classical that consisted of only a neck with no headstock or body. Unlike other frame guitars made primarily for practice, Frank determined to make a fully professional instrument to be used in performance and recording. Frank and I discussed at length his ideas for the construction of the Frame Guitar, and when he built his first prototype of the design in 1997, I purchased it.
The guitar disassembles into three pieces, and fits in a very narrow case. The frame clamps on to the central board making up the neck and body, and there is a piezo pickup for plugging in and amplifying the instrument. After Frank began to manufacture his Frame guitars under the “Frameworks” label, many players began to play them, notably Ralph Towner.
