Pacific Coast Highway

For four guitars. I’m finally making this charismatic quartet composition available on my website. Named for PCH, the iconic and stunning CA highway that hugs the coast for a thousand miles from Southern to Northern California, I tried to capture some of the unique spirit of the west coast when I composed Pacific Coast Highway in 1994. 28 pages.

Just Sayin'

For me this piece invokes the spirit of a time long gone by, when as a little boy I would play music with my father and uncle, and we'd have family sing-alongs. A relaxed and cool groove, this piece blends so much of the music I loved at that time, from early folk music to Smother's Brothers recordings to a generous hint of Antonio Carlos Jobim. Medium difficulty. 8 pages

"California Breeze”

For two guitars. I recorded this duet with Dai Kimura for Sony Japan in 2005. The video was filmed in Malibu California by Sony to promote the Japanese-only release of the recording. Originally titled “Genève”, I wrote this in 1986 while visiting Geneva Switzerland, and I renamed it "California Breeze" at the request of Sony for the recording with Dai. This is more of a popular tune, and I have not published it until now because I hesitated to write out the chordal accompaniment patterns, which were played somewhat freely, and not at all in a classical style. But finally my desire to publish this refreshing piece overcame my reservations, and I notated a reasonable facsimile to what I played on the recording. 20 pages.

Another Dream

for solo guitar. Written for Joseph Pecoraro and Billie Feather, I find the flowing modulation and compelling melodies quite beautiful, and I'm very satisfied with this lyrical and complex composition. Four Fingerpaintings

Green Galliard

I wrote Green Galliard in the style of Renaissance lutenist and composer John Dowland, and it is playfully based on the form of Dowland's charismatic work 'Frog Galliard'. Composed in 1984 during my lute playing days, Green Galliard has been out of print for many years. I'm now happy to offer this composition in print again.

Suite of seven pieces that are an exploration of child-like nature, from memories of one's own childhood to the experience of raising your own children. King Lotvin

Composed in London, and written for my friend Chris Kilvington, now dedicated to his memory. The title is an anagram of his name. It's a fast 7/8 composition in an Eastern European style. 7 pages

Mechanism

Moontan

Muir Woods

An early work with jazz influenced harmony, but very moody and introspective. One of my favorites. Recorded in 1986 on my CD 'Perfect Sky', it has a compelling lydian call to it. 5 pages.

Night on Maui

I love islands. Of the many I’ve visited, Maui is one I love most.  In “Night On Maui”, I try to conjure some of the magic of evenings in Hawaii, with images from some of my favorite places on this beautiful island. Tuning is D A D F# B D (same as Yamour and Equations of Beauty). 3 pages.

Numen Suite

A four movement suite based on my earlier atmospheric composition "Numen". Movements "Lumen", "Menhir" and "Numina" were written more than thirty years later. Portrait of Tárrega

Commissioned by Guitar Salon International, I composed this in the style of Francisco Tárrega. At GSI, we made a video of me playing this piece on the 1883 Torres guitar owned by Tárrega himself, a very special and historic opportunity (see youtube video, click glass icon to right). Moderately difficult level, five pages.

Roasted Green Tea

Second Glass

A rasgueado-based and vivacious piece with a compelling groove. Technically demanding. From "Suit Suite", an unreleased and unrecorded suite written in 2016. This is the first movement I've chosen to record, and it uses rasgueados as a foundation for its character. 7 pages.

I like music that give one a sense of dreaming, and evoke spacious and dream-like atmospheres, taking one out of the mundane and into more rarefied realms. To that end, I wrote Seven Poems, and as the title implies, approaching music poetically allowed me to create forms and structures that I might not have otherwise realized. Moderate difficulty. Sirocco

An advanced and challenging piece, Sirocco is one of my major contributions to classical guitar repertoire. The title 'Sirocco' refers to a strong wind that blows from Morocco across the Mediterranean into southern Spain, even blowing sand across the water at times. Like the wind, and like the culture of southern Spain, Sirocco brings to mind Moorish influence and even themes from farther south in Africa, blended with a Spanish sensibility. Three Places

These three pieces come from travels around the world. 'Skerries' is named for the charming Irish town north of Dublin, on the east coast of Ireland. 'Avenue of the Giants' is the old highway in California that winds through the coastal redwoods, the tallest trees in the world. And 'Call' is written for the old Jewish areas in the northern villages of Spain, in a blend of Spanish and Jewish style. From 'Yamour' - 13 pages.

Woven Harmony

These pieces make up a six-movement suite that combines the ideas of weaving and guitar. After observing a loom in action creating textile art, I wrote movements inspired by warp and weft, the threads that make up a weaving. The Warp movements, reflecting the structual nature of these weavings, are more abstract, while the Weft movements correspond to the beauty we can see in a weaving, and are more accessibly beautiful. Movements are Squares Suspended, Warp-Aspect 1, Weft-Aspect1, Warp-Aspect 2, Weft-Aspect2, and Woven World. From double album 'Yamour' - 20 pages.

Yamour

Title cut from my double CD and LP 'Yamour'. Groove oriented, this spirited piece emulates the sound of a band on one guitar, with a hint of jazz and a glimmer of Brazil. It’s one of my favorite works, and was a milestone for me compositionally to surmount the formidable challenge of composing with authority in what is now called ‘Yamour’ tuning, DADF#BD. Evening Dance

For two guitars. Finally in print again after many years! Written in 1990 for Christopher Parkening and David Brandon, Evening Dance is an adventurous theme and variations in E minor. Christopher and David recorded it beautifully for Angel Records, and some years later I recorded it as well with Scott Tennant. Advanced level, twenty pages.

Instantaneous Change

For two guitars. A more complex duet, with a strong contrapuntal theme and an energetic and somewhat dissonant development section. A compositional romp, for those who enjoy a chewier composition. Score and parts, moderately difficult, twenty pages.

Little Book of Duets

For two guitars. I offer this book of duets for the sublime purpose of sharing music together, in the same room, at the same time, as it has been done since ancient times, but was briefly interrupted during this period in history. Nuo Duo

The complete Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky arranged for two guitars. This is my handwritten manuscript score from 1986, finally available after almost 40 years! Qubit

for two guitars. Composed as collaboration between the fine Italian guitarist/composer Andrea Vettoretti and myself, Qubit is a sweet duet with 19th century overtones (despite its physics title), and is part of Andrea's recording project "Quantum One". Returning Home

For two guitars. A duet version of my very popular solo piece 'Home.' I expanded this into a duet for my friend and colleague Dai Kimura, and we recorded it together for King Records in Japan. 'Returning Home' retains the purity and simplicity of the solo version of 'Home', but with some added counterpoint and interplay. Score and parts, medium difficulty, fourteen pages.

Sanzen-in

For two guitars. After visiting the thousand-year old temple in Kyoto, I wrote this duet for Dai Kimura. There is a profound feeling in a garden that has been tended for over a millenium. We recorded this piece in Hollywood at the iconic Ocean Way Studio for a CD release with Sony Japan. Accessible, haunting melody, medium difficulty. Score and parts, 22 pages

Pacific Coast Highway

For four guitars. Written in 1994, I am finally making this charismatic quartet composition available on my website. Named for PCH, the iconic and stunning CA highway that hugs the coast from Southern California to Big Sur, I tried to capture some of the unique spirit of the west coast in this piece. 28 pages.

For guitar quartet accompanied by four-part guitar ensemble. Commissioned by Grand Canyon Guitar Society, Tucson Guitar Society, Arizona State University and Glendale Community College Guitar Programs. By Chants is really a concerto for four guitars, with a guitar orchestra in four parts accompanying the quartet. Since the commission came from a consortium in Arizona, I interwove a Havasupai theme into the composition. Transilience

Three movement suite for Guitar, Flute and Cello; challenging and complex work. I wrote this three movement suite for guitar, flute and cello in London in 1991. It was a commission by guitarist Joel Brown, and was recorded on the CD "Five Premieres" for Albany records. This is a composition with complex thematic interaction and lots of meter changes in the third movement, hence the title Transilience - which means to change quickly from one state to another. 61 pages

Archimedes

for voice and guitar. Humorous and charismatic work for voice and guitar, about Archimedes and his Eureka moment. Written for John Olson and Gioia De Cari, John and Gioia commissioned me to write a piece that was science based for a project they had been working on for several years, and what better subject for the piece than my hero, the great Greek mathematician Archimedes. Gioia and John came up with the brilliant video concept based on the lyrics I wrote for the piece. This is an instant classic!. Score and parts, twenty pages.
